New York City’s rapidly growing Winter Film Awards (WFA) Indie Film Festival, now in its fifth year, is establishing itself as a dynamic and exciting event in the heart of the City. Winter Film Awards focuses on diversity in Independent Film, with a special emphasis on highlighting women and minority filmmakers. We showcase films from emerging filmmakers from around the world in all genres and seek to show our audience a dazzling array of entertaining cinematic content they would never have the opportunity to see otherwise.
Among the 86 Official Selections to be screened at Cinema Village in the heart of Greenwich Village (22 East 12th Street, New York, NY 10003) at the Indie Film Festival on February 18-26 2016, the WFA team is proud to showcase an exciting slate of eight films from Asia, providing a fascinating overview of the best of the Region’s indie film community.

Achiraka World
The scientist who works at a robot laboratory is an utterly incorrigible slob. His workspace is a mountain of clutter and trash. One day he falls in love at first sight with a woman who comes to his lab. To win her over he builds a cleaning robot to spruce up the place. But things don’t go as planned…

Cesium and a Tokyo Girl
Mimi is a 17 year old high school girl who lives with her parents in the Tokyo suburb of Asagaya on the Chuo Line. Mimi is always asking herself “Where do I belong and what is the truth?” Three days after the Great East Japan Earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident, Mimi’s fate changed drastically. Radiation-contaminated rain fell in Tokyo. Since then, Mimi has endured pain in her tongue and she is determined to find out why. She and the gods start measuring cesium levels throughout Tokyo. They visit hot spots of cesium pollution to see the reality of damage from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant. Will Mimi and her god buddies manage to squeeze out a happy ending? A magical mystery tour through space and time begins!

Colors of Life
The Shimuras, mother Fukumi and daughter Yoko, devote their daily lives in a lifelong pursuit to understanding and preserving the national treasure that is Japanese textiles,

Ivan Ivan
Ivan Ivanovych is a farmer who was evacuated from and subsequently returned to his village of Pripyat in 1986. This poetic account sheds light on the Chernobyl disaster and heeds warning to learn from our mistakes.

Journey
Determined to carve out a better future for herself, teenage Gouri leaves behind a life of prostitution that was forced upon her at a young age and takes a job as a caregiver for a mistrusting elderly widow. But just as she starts to find her footing in this new life, Gouri’s past rears its ugly head again.

Late Expectations
India is a high school senior living in Brooklyn; she’s gotten a full scholarship to Brown University and is a model student, good daughter, fun best friend and loving girlfriend. On the outside, she seems to be living the teenage dream. However, it is all a lie. Internally, she is tormented, and hides a secret that threatens to end her most important relationships. She finally gains the courage to reveal her double life but discovers something that shatters her world completely.

Shabu-Shabu Spirit
A fiance, Keita, goes to meet the family, the father, Shozo, begins his secret appraisal – a test to see whether this fiancé is worthy or not of marrying his daughter. Trying to reduce the distance between them, the mother prepares a single nabe (cooking pot) for the shabu-shabu meal. As Shozo’s eyes glint brightly, Keita reaches towards the shabu-shabu.

Si Lunchai
The poor yet smart trickster Si Lunchai triumphs over the cruel king. An adaptation of an Indonesian legend, inspired by the style of the Southeast Asian shadow puppet play “Wayang Kulit”.

The Journey
Uncle Chuan is an old-fashioned and conservative man staying alone in Cameron Highlands leading a lonely retired life. His only hope is to reunite with his only daughter Ah Bee, who will be returning from overseas after graduation to stay together as a traditional family. Finally Ah Bee comes back, but brings her foreign boyfriend Benji with her with plans to marry. Uncle Chuan vigorously opposes the marriage due to Ben’s frivolous behaviour but he fails to change his daughter’s mind. At the end, Uncle Chuan agrees to their marriage reluctantly, with a condition to be fulfilled- their wedding ceremony must be a Chinese ceremony.

The Real Miyagi
A true story of a man behind the biggest hollywood action heroes! This long-awaited documentary, three years in the making, captures the life of master Fumio Demura, the man who has influenced a bevy of Hollywood’s elite over the last 50 years. Those talents include Chuck Norris, Bruce Lee, Steven Seagal and many more. It was the stunt double role that he landed in The Karate Kid and the friendship he formed with actor, Pat Morita, that would forever change his life. Mr. Morita fashioned his unforgettable character, Mr. Miyagi, off of Master Demura which earned him an Oscar Nomination in 1985. This is the story of a man they call The Real Miyagi.

Tuyul: Part 1
TUYUL tells a reimagined story about the Indonesian urban mythical spirit. Husband and Wife, Daniel (Gandhi Fernando) and Mia (Dinda Kanya Dewi) move to an old house given by Mia’s mother after she passed away. Daniel is the one that insists they move to her old house to saves money before the birth of their first born, while he is working on his job at a tea plantation project. After cleaning up one of the rooms, Daniel finds a bottle hidden mysteriously underneath the broken wooden floor. The empty bottle might be a home to a scary creature that could potentially put Daniel, Mia, and their unborn child in danger.
